BACKGROUND: An ageing prison population with complex health needs combined with punitive sentencing practices means palliative care for incarcerated individuals is increasingly important. However, there is limited evidence regarding the models of care delivery in high-income countries, and their associated challenges and benefits. AIM: To develop a typology of models of palliative care provision for incarcerated individuals, synthesise evidence of their outcomes and describe facilitators of and challenges in delivering different models of palliative and end-of-life care in prisons. DESIGN: Scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley, with narrative synthesis. The protocol was registered prospectively (reviewregistry1260). DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the Social Sciences Citation Index and grey literature were searched on 15th March 2023. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used for quality appraisal. RESULTS: A total of 16,865 records were screened; 22 peer-reviewed articles and 18 grey literature sources met the inclusion criteria. Three models were identified: Embedded Hospice, Outsourcing Care and Community Collaboration. The Embedded Hospice model shows potential benefits for patients and prisons. Outsourcing Care may miss opportunities for comprehensive care. Collaborative Care relies on proactive prison-community relationships that could be formalised for improvement. Psychosocial and bereavement needs of those dying in prison and their caregivers lack sufficient documentation. CONCLUSION: Further research is needed to evaluate prison hospice costs and examine how prison hospices impact compassionate release usage. Beyond the USA, policies might formalise care pathways and recognise best practices. Further investigation to address psychosocial needs of people in prison with life-limiting illnesses and post-death bereavement support is required.

OBJECTIVES: We aim to independently assess the validity of the damage index for antiphospholipid syndrome (DIAPS) in thrombotic antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients by exploring the prevalence and risk factors of organ damage and evaluating its impact on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). METHODS: Cross-sectional study including all thrombotic APS patients (Sydney criteria) attending a Portuguese tertiary centre. Damage was assessed using the DIAPS, and HR-QoL using the 3- and 5-level EuroQol HR-QoL (EQ-D5-3L and 5L), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) applied via a phone questionnaire. Spearman's correlation between DIAPS and the HR-QoL scales was performed. Risk factors for damage accrual and HR-QoL impairment were explored using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Among the 108 patients (female, 65.7%; white, 90.7%; primary APS, 75.9%; median disease duration, 6 years), damage (DIAPS≥1) developed in 48.2% of patients (mean ± SD DIAPS, 3.08 ± 1.83). DIAPS's neuropsychiatric domain was the most affected (24.2%), followed by the peripheral vascular domain (20.3%). No clinical, demographic nor laboratory parameters were significantly associated with damage. Regarding HR-QoL, pain/discomfort, anxiety/depression and usual activities domains were the most frequently impaired in both scales. DIAPS's domains correlated similarly with the EQ-5D-3L and 5L scales' individual domains. Female sex, medical disorders, secondary APS and type of presenting thrombosis (arterial) increased the risk of HR-QoL impairment. Total DIAPS was associated with higher odds of mobility, self-care and pain/discomfort impairment in both EQ-5D-3L and 5L scales but lost its independent risk in multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION: This external validation of DIAPS reinforces the ability of the score to correlate with HR-QoL while also highlighting risk factors for HR-QoL impairment other than damage accrual.

A significant fraction of the food produced worldwide is currently lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, squandering natural and economic resources. Food waste valorization will be an important necessity in the coming years. This work investigates the ability of food waste to serve as a viable nutritional substrate for the heterotrophic growth of Chlorella vulgaris. The impact of different pretreatments on the elemental composition and microbial contamination of seven retail food waste mixtures was evaluated. Among the pretreatment methods applied to the food waste formulations, autoclaving was able to eliminate all microbial contamination and increase the availability of reducing sugars by 30%. Ohmic heating was also able to eliminate most of the contaminations in the food wastes in shorter time periods than autoclave. However, it has reduced the availability of reducing sugars, making it less preferable for microalgae heterotrophic cultivation. The direct utilization of food waste containing essential nutrients from fruits, vegetables, dairy and bakery products, and meat on the heterotrophic growth of microalgae allowed a biomass concentration of 2.2 × 108 cells·mL-1, being the culture able to consume more than 42% of the reducing sugars present in the substrate, thus demonstrating the economic and environmental potential of these wastes.

The incorporation of nanostructures loaded with bioactive compounds into food matrices is a promising approach to develop new functional foods with improved nutritional, health profiles and good sensorial properties. The rheological and tribological properties of yogurt enriched with curcumin-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) were evaluated. Also, the TCA solubility index, the bioaccessibility of curcumin and cell viability were assessed after dynamic in vitro digestion. The presence of SLN in yogurt did not affect its rheological properties; however, SLN addition increased the lubrication capability of yogurt. After in vitro digestion, yogurt with added SLN (yogurt_SLN) presented a lower TCA solubility index (22 %) than the plain yogurt (39 %). The bioaccessibility and stability of curcumin were statistically similar for yogurt_SLN (30 % and 42 %, respectively) and SLN alone (20 % and 39 %, respectively). Regarding cell viability results, the intestinal digesta filtrates of both controls (i.e., SLN alone and plain yogurt) did not affect significantly the cell viability, while the yogurt_SLN presented a possible cytotoxic effect at the concentrations tested. In general, the incorporation of SLN into yogurt seemed to promote the mouthfeel of the yogurt and did not adversely affect the bioaccessibility of curcumin. However, the interaction of SLN and yogurt matrix seemed to have a cytotoxic effect after in vitro digestion, which should be further investigated. Despite that, SLN has a high potential to be used as nanostructure in a functional food as a strategy to increase the bioactive compounds' bioaccessibility.

The association between dystonia and early-onset epileptic encephalopathy (EOEE) may have a genetic basis. Phosphatidylinositol glycan biosynthesis class A protein (PIGA) germline mutations have been described in the last decade and associated with refractory EOEEs. Dysmorphisms and visceral abnormalities have also been reported. Here, we present the case of a now 8-month-old child who was evaluated for dystonia, visual impairment, and developmental delay at 2 months of age, followed by refractory focal seizures when he was 4 months old. The remaining examination was normal, besides an accelerated linear growth. His brain magnetic resonance and an extensive metabolic investigation failed to show any abnormalities. At 7 months of age, the exome sequencing found a hemizygous PIGA pathogenic variant-c.1352T > C (p.(Ile451Thr). Seizures improved after the association of carbamazepine with levetiracetam and the beginning of the ketogenic diet. To our knowledge, this is the first time the phenotype associated with this specific mutation is described. Our patient had the singularity of manifesting with remarkable dystonia, over 2 months before the onset of seizures. We also point to the utility of the gene sequencing approach in the diagnosis of patients with dystonia and EOEEs, since identification of the genetic cause may help in patient's management and families' empowerment.

BACKGROUND: Human immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines display a large heterogeneity of induced immunity and the underlying immune mechanisms for this remain largely unknown. METHODS: Using a systems biology approach, we longitudinally profiled a unique cohort of female high and low responders to the BNT162b vaccine, who were known from previous COVID-19 vaccinations to develop maximum and minimum immune responses to the vaccine. We utilized high dimensional flow cytometry, bulk and single cell mRNA sequencing and 48-plex serum cytokine analyses. FINDINGS: We revealed early, transient immunological and molecular signatures that distinguished high from low responders and correlated with B and T cell responses measured 14 days later. High responders featured a distinct transcriptional activity of interferon-driven genes and genes connected to enhanced antigen presentation. This was accompanied by a robust cytokine response related to Th1 differentiation. Both transcriptome and serum cytokine signatures were confirmed in two independent confirmatory cohorts. INTERPRETATION: Collectively, our data contribute to a better understanding of the immunogenicity of mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines, which might lead to the optimization of vaccine designs for individuals with poor vaccine responses. A laryngeal mask is one of the most widely used airway management devices. The SingularityTM Air is a second-generation laryngeal mask whose shaft angle can be adjusted after insertion. Since the device's performance has been assessed on mannequins only, this study aimed to evaluate SingularityTM Air's effectiveness in the clinical setting. The prospective single-center cohort study included 100 adults undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia and suitable for airway securing with a laryngeal mask. The primary endpoint was the oropharyngeal leak pressure, and the secondary endpoints were the ease of insertion and the patient's comfort. Laryngeal mask insertion was successful in 97%, and mechanical ventilation was possible in 96% of patients. After insertion, the median (IQR) oropharyngeal leak pressure was 25 (18-25) cm H2O, which remained stable at 25 (25-25) cm H2O after 20 min. The median (IQR) time for successful manual bag ventilation was 42 (34-50) seconds. Nineteen patients complained of side effects (e.g., sore throat, difficulty swallowing), but none persisted. The SingularityTM Air performed well in a clinical setting, and its oropharyngeal leak pressure was comparable to that of other masks reported in the literature. The time for successful manual ventilation was slightly longer, and patients reported more temporary side effects.

The incidence of retropharyngeal abscesses has been decreasing since the introduction of antibiotic therapy, and it is currently a rare diagnosis in adults, although there are some recent cases in the literature. Given its seriousness, if not treated promptly, the infection can progress rapidly and its complications can be fatal, making it a serious health problem. A 79-year-old woman presented at her primary care center with complaints of persistent odynophagia for about two weeks and rapidly progressive dysphagia in five days, initially for solids and later for solids and liquids. On observation, she had difficulty swallowing saliva and presented a painful mass in the bilateral anterior submental and anterior cervical region. Due to the rapid progression of symptoms and the findings of the physical examination, the patient was referred to the emergency department for a suspected abscess or cervical mass. In the emergency department, a cervical CT scan was performed, which revealed a retropharyngeal abscess measuring approximately 7 x 6 x 4 cm, involving the right carotid artery and internal jugular vein, with compression of the internal jugular vein. The patient was admitted to the otorhinolaryngology department, where intravenous antibiotic therapy with third-generation cephalosporin and clindamycin was initiated. She underwent exploration in the operating room to determine the cause of the abscess and transoral drainage of the already spontaneously draining abscess. After completing antibiotic therapy, a follow-up CT scan showed complete resolution of the abscess without suggestive masses of neoplasm or foreign bodies, therefore, the cause of the abscess has not been identified.  The most frequent cause of retropharyngeal abscess in adults is dental septic foci and another commonly described cause is the ingestion of foreign bodies such as fish bones or chicken bones. Early diagnosis of this condition is crucial, as delays in treatment initiation can lead to the progression of infection into the deep cervical spaces, resulting in serious complications such as mediastinitis, pericarditis, jugular vein thrombosis, sepsis, laryngeal edema, conditions with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is important for any doctor to be aware of warning signs and symptoms in patients who present such symptoms, especially primary care doctors, who are the first gateway to health services and to whom patients often turn first. This case report shows the importance of suspicion and subsequent referral for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Rhodopsin-1 (Rh1), the main photosensitive protein of Drosophila, is a seven-transmembrane domain protein, which is inserted co-translationally in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Biogenesis of Rh1 occurs in the ER, where various chaperones interact with Rh1 to aid in its folding and subsequent transport from the ER to the rhabdomere, the light-sensing organelle of the photoreceptors. Xport-A has been proposed as a chaperone/transport factor for Rh1, but the exact molecular mechanism for Xport-A activity upon Rh1 is unknown. Here, we propose a model where Xport-A functions as a chaperone during the biogenesis of Rh1 in the ER by stabilizing the first five transmembrane domains (TMDs) of Rh1.

The contamination of water used in post-harvest handling and processing operations of fresh and frozen fruit, vegetables and herbs (ffFVHs) is a global concern. The most relevant microbial hazards associated with this water are: Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., human pathogenic Escherichia coli and enteric viruses, which have been linked to multiple outbreaks associated with ffFVHs in the European Union (EU). Contamination (i.e. the accumulation of microbiological hazards) of the process water during post-harvest handling and processing operations is affected by several factors including: the type and contamination of the FVHs being processed, duration of the operation and transfer of microorganisms from the product to the water and vice versa, etc. For food business operators (FBOp), it is important to maintain the microbiological quality of the process water to assure the safety of ffFVHs. Good manufacturing practices (GMP) and good hygienic practices (GHP) related to a water management plan and the implementation of a water management system are critical to maintain the microbiological quality of the process water. Identified hygienic practices include technical maintenance of infrastructure, training of staff and cooling of post-harvest process water. Intervention strategies (e.g. use of water disinfection treatments and water replenishment) have been suggested to maintain the microbiological quality of process water. Chlorine-based disinfectants and peroxyacetic acid have been reported as common water disinfection treatments. However, given current practices in the EU, evidence of their efficacy under industrial conditions is only available for chlorine-based disinfectants. The use of water disinfection treatments must be undertaken following an appropriate water management strategy including validation, operational monitoring and verification. During operational monitoring, real-time information on process parameters related to the process and product, as well as the water and water disinfection treatment(s) are necessary. More specific guidance for FBOp on the validation, operational monitoring and verification is needed.

T cell receptor (TCR) Vγ4-expressing γδ T cells comprise interferon γ (IFNγ)- and interleukin-17 (IL-17)-producing effector subsets, with a preference for IL-17 effector fate decisions during early ontogeny. The existence of adult-thymus-derived IL-17+ T cells (γδ17) remains controversial. Here, we use a mouse model in which T cells are generated exclusively in the adult thymus and employ single-cell chromatin state analysis to study their development. We identify adult-thymus-derived Vγ4 T cells that have all the molecular programs to become IL-17 producers. However, they have reduced IL-17 production capabilities and rarely reach the periphery. Moreover, this study provides high-resolution profiles of Vγ4 T cells in the adult thymus and lymph nodes and identifies Zeb1 as a potential γδ17 cell regulator. Together, this study provides valuable insights into the developmental traits of Vγ4 T cells during adulthood and supports the idea of age-specific signals required for thymic export and/or peripheral maturation of γδ17 cells.

•Muscle strength decline is a crucial factor for the course of sarcopenia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. •There is a need to discuss the association between IBD and sarcopenia focusing not only on changes of muscle mass, but also on muscle strength. •A narrative review was conducted in order to present the set of factors with impact in both muscle strength and IBD. •Inflammation, reduced nutrient intake and malabsorption, changes in body composition and gut microbiota dysbiosis are most likely the main factors with impact on muscle strength in IBD patients. Inflammation, changes in nutrient absorption and gut dysbiosis are common conditions in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. These factors may lead to variations in macro- and micronutrients and, particularly, to an imbalance of protein metabolism, loss of muscle mass and development of sarcopenia. This narrative review aims to present the set of factors with impact in muscle strength and physical performance that may potentially mediate the relation between inflammatory bowel disease and sarcopenia. Studies that associated changes in muscle strength, sarcopenia and inflammatory bowel disease were selected through a literature search in databases Medline, Pubmed and Scielo using relevant keywords: muscle strength, physical performance, sarcopenia and inflammatory bowel disease. Chronic inflammation is currently reported as a determinant factor in the development of muscle atrophy in inflammatory bowel disease. In addition, strength decline in inflammatory bowel disease patients may be also influenced by changes in body composition and by gut dysbiosis. Measures of muscle strength and physical performance should be considered in the initial identification of sarcopenia, particularly in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, for a timely intervention can be provided. Presence of proinflammatory cytokines, high adiposity, malabsorption and consequent deficits of macro and micronutrients, loss of muscle mass, and gut dysbiosis may be the main factors with impact in muscle strength, that probably mediate the relation between inflammatory bowel disease and sarcopenia.

RESUMO Inflamação, alterações na absorção de nutrientes e a disbiose intestinal são condições comuns em indivíduos com doença inflamatória intestinal. Estes fatores podem levar a variações corporais do teor de macro e micronutrientes e, em particular, a um desequilíbrio no metabolismo de proteínas com perda de massa muscular e desenvolvimento de sarcopenia. Esta revisão narrativa visa apresentar o conjunto de fatores com impacto na força e função muscular que podem potencialmente mediar a relação entre doença inflamatória intestinal e sarcopenia. Estudos que associaram as alterações de força muscular, sarcopenia e doença inflamatória intestinal foram selecionados, através de uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados Medline, Pubmed e Scielo, usando palavras-chave relevantes: força muscular, desempenho físico, sarcopenia e doença inflamatória intestinal. A inflamação crónica é atualmente citada como um fator determinante no desenvolvimento de atrofia muscular nos casos de doença inflamatória intestinal. Além disso, o declínio de força em indivíduos com doença inflamatória intestinal, também pode ser influenciado pelas alterações na composição corporal e pela disbiose instestinal. Indicadores de força muscular e de desempenho físico devem ser considerados na identificação inicial de sarcopenia, principalmente em indivíduos com doença inflamatória intestinal, para que uma intervenção precoce possa ocorrer. A presença de citocinas pró-inflamatórias, elevada adiposidade corporal, má absorção intestinal com consequente déficit de macro e micronutrientes, perda de massa muscular e disbiose intestinal poderão ser os principais fatores com impacto na força muscular, que provavelmente medeiam a relação entre doença inflamatória intestinal e sarcopenia.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, has not yet been reported in Timor-Leste, a sovereign state northwest of Australia. In the context of improved access to diagnostic resources and expanding clinical networks in the Australasian region, we report the first 3 cases of culture-confirmed melioidosis in Timor-Leste. These cases describe a broad range of typical presentations, including sepsis, pneumonia, multifocal abscesses, and cutaneous infection. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Timor-Leste isolates belong to the Australasian clade of B. pseudomallei, rather than the Asian clade, consistent with the phylogeographic separation across the Wallace Line. This study underscores an urgent need to increase awareness of this pathogen in Timor-Leste and establish diagnostic laboratories with improved culture capacity in regional hospitals. Clinical suspicion should prompt appropriate sampling and communication with laboratory staff to target diagnostic testing. Local antimicrobial guidelines have recently been revised to include recommendations for empiric treatment of severe sepsis.

An assessment was conducted on the level of inactivation of relevant pathogens that could be present in processed animal protein of porcine origin intended to feed poultry and aquaculture animals when methods 2 to 5 and method 7, as detailed in Regulation (EU) No 142/2011, are applied. Five approved scenarios were selected for method 7. Salmonella Senftenberg, Enterococcus faecalis, spores of Clostridium perfringens and parvoviruses were shortlisted as target indicators. Inactivation parameters for these indicators were extracted from extensive literature search and a recent EFSA scientific opinion. An adapted Bigelow model was fitted to retrieved data to estimate the probability that methods 2 to 5, in coincidental and consecutive modes, and the five scenarios of method 7 are able to achieve a 5 log10 and a 3 log10 reduction of bacterial indicators and parvoviruses, respectively. Spores of C. perfringens were the indicator with the lowest probability of achieving the target reduction by methods 2 to 5, in coincidental and consecutive mode, and by the five considered scenarios of method 7. An expert knowledge elicitation was conducted to estimate the certainty of achieving a 5 log10 reduction of spores of C. perfringens considering the results of the model and additional evidence. A 5 log10 reduction of C. perfringens spores was judged: 99-100% certain for methods 2 and 3 in coincidental mode; 98-100% certain for method 7 scenario 3; 80-99% certain for method 5 in coincidental mode; 66-100% certain for method 4 in coincidental mode and for method 7 scenarios 4 and 5; 25-75% certain for method 7 scenario 2; and 0-5% certain for method 7 scenario 1. Higher certainty is expected for methods 2 to 5 in consecutive mode compared to coincidental mode.

Supramolecular synthetic transporters are crucial to understand and activate the passage across lipid membranes of hydrophilic effector molecules. Herein, we introduce photoswitchable calixarenes for the light-controlled transport activation of cationic peptide cargos across model lipid bilayers and inside living cells. Our approach was based on rationally designed p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene receptors equipped with a hydrophobic azobenzene arm, which recognize cationic peptide sequences at the nM range. Activation of membrane peptide transport is confirmed, in synthetic vesicles and living cells, for calixarene activators featuring the azobenzene arm in the E configuration. Therefore, this method allows the modulation of the transmembrane transport of peptide cargos upon Z-E photoisomerization of functionalized calixarenes using 500 nm visible light. These results showcase the potential of photoswitchable counterion activators for the light-triggered delivery of hydrophilic biomolecules and pave the way for potential applications in remotely controlled membrane transport and photopharmacology applications of hydrophilic functional biomolecules.

Since early 2022, various Omicron variants have dominated the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in most countries. All Omicron variants are B-cell immune escape variants, and antibodies induced by first-generation COVID-19 vaccines or by infection with earlier SARS-CoV-2 variants largely fail to protect individuals from Omicron infection. In the present study, we investigated the effect of Omicron infections in triple-vaccinated and in antigen-naive individuals. We show that Omicron breakthrough infections occurring 2-3.5 months after the third vaccination restore B-cell and T-cell immune responses to levels similar to or higher than those measured 14 days after the third vaccination, including the induction of Omicron-neutralizing antibodies. Antibody responses in breakthrough infection derived mostly from cross-reacting B cells, initially induced by vaccination, whereas Omicron infections in antigen-naive individuals primarily generated B cells binding to the Omicron but not the Wuhan spike protein. Although antigen-naive individuals mounted considerable T-cell responses after infection, B-cell responses were low, and neutralizing antibodies were frequently below the limit of detection. In summary, the detection of Omicron-associated B-cell responses in primed and in antigen-naive individuals supports the application of Omicron-adapted COVID-19 vaccines, but calls into question their suitability if they also contain/encode antigens of the original Wuhan virus.

Ecological and safe packaging solutions arise as pivotal points in the development of an integrated system for sustainable meat production. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a combined chitosan (Ch) + green tea extract (GTE) + essential oil (thyme oil, TO; flaxseed oil, FO; or oregano oil, OO) coating on the safety and quality of vacuum-packaged beef during storage at 4 °C. An optimized bio-based coating formulation was selected (2% Ch + 2% GTE + 0.1% FO) to be applied to three fresh beef cuts (shoulder, Sh; knuckle, Kn; Striploin, St) based on its pH (5.8 ± 0.1), contact angle (22.3 ± 0.4°) and rheological parameters (viscosity = 0.05 Pa.s at shear rate > 20 s-1). Shelf-life analysis showed that the Ch-GTE-FO coating delayed lipid oxidation and reduced total viable counts (TVC) and Enterobacteriaceae growth compared with uncoated beef samples over five days. In addition, Ch-GTE-FO coating decreased total color changes of beef samples (e.g., ∆E* = 9.84 and 3.94, for non-coated and coated Kn samples, respectively) for up to five days. The original textural parameters (hardness, adhesiveness and springiness) of beef cuts were maintained during storage when Ch-GTE-FO coating was applied. Based on the physicochemical and microbial characterization results, the combination of the Ch-GTE-FO coating developed was effective in preserving the quality of fresh beef cuts during refrigerated storage along with vacuum packaging.

Foods of animal origin are increasingly considered a source of extended spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria which can disseminate throughout the food chain and become a health concern for humans. This work aimed to evaluate the occurrence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in 100 retail minced meat samples taken in markets in Pamplona, Colombia. A total of 19 ESBL-producing isolates were obtained, 18 identified as E. coli and one as E. fergusonii. Fifteen isolates (78.9 %) carried blaCTX-M and blaTEM genes, one (5.2 %) blaSHV and blaTEM genes, one isolate (5.2 %) carried blaCTX-M and one (5.2 %) blaSHV alone. The majority of CTX-M-positive E. coli isolates carried the blaCTX-M-15 gene (13 isolates), being the blaCTX-M-9, blaCTX-M-2, and blaCTX-M-8 (one isolate each) also detected. Two SHV-positive isolates presented the blaSHV-5 and blaSHV-12 allele. The isolate identified as E. fergusonii was positive for blaCTX-M-65 gene and mcr-1 gene. Sixteen isolates (84.2 %) belonged to phylogroups A and B1 and grouped together in the phylogenetic tree obtained by MLST; phylogroups E and F were also detected. Transfer of ESBL resistance was demonstrated for the E. fergusonii isolate. Whole genome sequencing of this isolate revealed the presence of plasmids carrying additional resistance genes. This investigation showed the high prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in retail samples of minced meat. Also, the isolation of a strain of E. fergusonii is an additional concern, as some resistance genes are located in mobile elements, which can be transmitted to other bacteria. These evidences support the increasing public health concern considering the spreading of resistance genes through the food chain.
